Today I would like to focus on what I learned in this class and how I am going to use it and apply on my future field. From the beginning of this course, I had zero knowledge about patents, how it is actually filed out, the types of patents, the fact that there are so many patent wars between big companies, and how some of the people seek for economic opportunities and act as patent trolls.
Currently being a freshman, I am not 100% sure of what I would do for my career, but I believe that what I learned in this class can help my future field. Not only I could apply the knowledge I learned from this class on my future career, but so I could apply to my everyday life. What I didn't understand before taking class, I would now understand the words used to relate patents on the news and understand the current issue. Before taking this class I never fully understood the patent wars major companies were having (between Apple and Samsung, or even in broader way of all major companies suing each other for infringing patents). I only understood why they were suing each other (because of patents they filed and whomever infringed it, they sued against). Yet, I did not understand how complicated and ongoing in was in current time. After fully understanding the complications of patent system, it definitely is complicated, time-consuming, and expensive to file a patent, sue a company for infringement, and win the patent war.

Hi Tiffany, it’s great that you are taking this class as a Freshman. I agree with you that the tools we learned in this class will be useful regardless of what you do in the future. Patents are getting more and more important because opportunities in our generation is encoded with technologies. We will see more news that talk about patents and more lawsuits fight over patents. knowing the basics of patents is fundamental to understanding what is going on in the business world. It would great if you can also talk about whether learning about the patents and technologies influence what you want to do in the future. Thanks you for sharing your thoughts!
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that this class helped me get a good grasp of the patent industry as a whole. Something I realized was that using Twitter in this class has really encouraged me to research current articles about patents and now, I feel that I am more knowledgeable of the current patent world. I'm sure that the things we learned in this class will be very useful in the future, no matter what field you go into.
ReplyDeleteHi Tiffany,
ReplyDeleteOnce again really nice blog post! It'd really cool you're taking this class as a freshman, where you'll have many mor years at Cal to come up with cool things to patent! I definitely agree with you that the class provided us with enough knowledge to understand the current climate of the patent industry and really understand how tumultuous a place it is. However, I feel that the reason for all the patent wars in the news with big companies such as Apple and Samsung is only due to the fact that the patent industry is so lucrative and everyone wants more of it. Best of luck with your time at Cal!
Hi Tiffany,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your post. It was cool to read about your perspective as a freshman. I think it is great that you are ahead of the game by taking this course and kudos for keeping up with the news. I think that's such a valuable habit that makes taking college courses more meaningful and memorable since you can apply the theory to reality.
I think as technology continues to progress and these big tech corporations expand, then patent law will become increasingly important. Keep up the great work!
Hi Tiffany,
ReplyDeleteI think by taking this course as a freshman you set yourself ahead of the game in terms of engaging in entrepreneurial activities. I agree with you how complicated and difficult it is when it comes to understanding patents and the wars between corporations and trolls and I think this course really laid a solid foundation for us in gaining a better foothold of the type of world that exists for young entrepreneurs. I'm just curious to hear if you think reformation is coming to this system? The way you described it highlights a system of disorder and chaos and do you think we're on the path towards fixing that? I would love to hear your opinion on this but otherwise fantastic post!
Hi Tiff, I cannot agree more with your initial sentiment. I had the same exact feeling when I started this class as well - I was completely clueless. I had absolutely no knowledge about patents... but this class taught me a lot. This class taught me how patents are actually filed, and we also learned about different types of patents, and about patent wars between big companies, and how patent trolls seek economic opportunities out of them. Great summary!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great posts! It was cool to see a freshman taking the class, you've definitely stepped ahead of your peers by taking this class so early in your college career! You now have the tools and the knowledge to go out and make a difference, while also protecting your intellectual property rights! I agree with you about learning so much about the intricacies of the patent world and piercing the legal jargon was most helpful in the course! Great job!
