Blog 13: Collaborative Learning Using Social Media, Part 2

Hello all,

I just want to add on more on what I wrote for my previous post. Since I wrote about what I really liked and disliked about the usage of social media, I want to elaborate on how I would recommend other professors to teach in this way and how we can further improve this way of learning. I personally find using all social media in class very interesting, unique, and efficient. However, I think it is pretty hard for big classes that focus on large field of subject hard to use only social medias to teach the course. For instance, it was productive and efficient for this class to use social media to learn about patents because we always had specific topic about patent (whether obviousness, novelty, paten trolls, etc). However, class that deals with subject that has huge field, such as, Intro to Economics, Intro to Psychology, Computer Science, math, etc would be hard to use social media collaboratively.

Yet, I think classes that deal with media, such as, media studies, film, or art could efficiently use social media to teach and learn the class because social media is something they should be familiar with. When we say that the class is appropriate enough to use social media collaboratively, I would recommend the instructor or professor to use not more than 2 or 3 social media because if it goes over three social media, then it becomes hard to handle and manage all of them. I think it is very productive and efficient to only focus on certain media and use it consistently (like we did in class) to ensure everyone is getting used to the same source.

  1. This is such a unique post! I agree - I think collaborative learning could really be helpful and a game-changer for classes if implemented correctly.

  2. This is a very interesting post. I agree that the use of social media in a class depends on the subject. Certain classes make sense to promote the use of social media because it needs more interaction or more familiarity with different fields of media. I think for our class specifically, we used social media because it promoted sharing of ideas and it was a creative way to learn. This method was pretty effective for me!

  3. Overall, I agree with your thought that the idea of using social media should be used in a small class setting. However, what would your take on section GSI's using online social platforms? Even though some courses such as the ones you listed cover a broad topic, I still feel that out of class interaction among students would be nothing but beneficial. If anything, this course and its use of social media showed just how important other students are in my learning and I would love for other professors to experiment with this concept.

  4. Hey Tiffany! I really, really like this post. I never thought about this point before, but I actually do agree with one of your unique points that social media may be hard to implement for some learnings. While it was really helpful for us since we were covering such a narrow topic, I do agree that class that deals bigger subjects such as Economics, Psychology, or math would be hard to use social media collaboratively.

  5. Great post talking about how social learning may not be acceptable for all classes or majors! It's important to know the best way to teach the material you need to teach, and also take into account the size of your class! I think because in social teaching the instructor becomes a guide, delegating some of the actual learning can be done on a larger scale than before, but careful thought needs to go into how to best adapt social learning!

    Great post!
